What
does OMR stand for?
What does ICR stand for? |
| What does OCR stand for? |
|
OCR
stands for Optical Character Recognition. This term is typically used for
general character recognition which includes the transformation of anything
humanly readable to machine manipulatable representation.
In this context the task of character recognition involves understanding of machine printed characters and handwritten characters. There have been significant advances in the former and the bulk of software available for automation is geared towards the recognition of machine printed character recognition |
| What does OMR stand for? |
| OMR stands for Optical Mark Reader or Recognition OMR is used to read forms which have variable size field entries and the entry can be in form of a check mark, a cross, or some scribble. These forms include but are not restricted to automated entry sheets where the user needs to fill in an oval shape with a number 2 pencil. OMR usually needs a blank form and a definition of entry zones, then the OMR detects marks in the scanned image and classifies them accordingly. |
What does ICR stand for? |
| ICR
stand for Intelligent Character Recognition. ICR is usually considered to be
the extension of OCR which explicitly includes handwritten characters. There
are a large number of research efforts in this field and does not seem to be
ending anytime soon. Most working testbeds work on limited vocabulary and clean
handwriting. A robust mechanism does not exist to perform this task
effectively. However there are a large number of publications and test images
which are available for further research. |

| How is Evaluator 2.0 different from the traditional OMR reading systems? |
|
For the past 20-30 years, many tasks that were once performed in hardware have been solved more efficiently in software. This is just another one of those tasks. In 2001, Veltronics released the first version of the Evaluator software package. Evaluator 2.0 works with an image scanner. Specialized, dedicated equipment is not necessary. Since the software has some intelligence, it does not require forms to fit stringent specifications.. Forms can be printed on a laser printer and duplicated with a offset Printer. It is much more flexible and economical than a traditional hardware based approach. |
| 3. Precautions/Prerequisite |
| What will happen if students make marks on the OMR forms using a pen? |
| Which
types of desktop operating systems are usually supported? |
| How
much disk space does an imaging system typically require? |
| What if my database is too big to fit in one data volume? |
| How
much total RAM does imaging software require? |
| What will happen if students make marks on the OMR forms using a pen? |
| Nothing,
in the sense that the form will be read by the machine. However, if a mistake
is made, it is impossible for the student to erase the error. It is possible,
but not trivial or entirely reliable, for staff to correct such errors. It is
for this reason that students are instructed to use pencil. |
| Which
types of desktop operating systems are usually supported? |
| Most
imaging systems have client applications that can run as Windows applications
on Windows 98, and Windows NT or higher versions. |
| How much disk space does an imaging system typically require? |
| With
the rapid drop in prices for hard drives and optical media, it costs much less
to store documents on an imaging system than with paper. A single page
typically occupies around 946KB of disk space, the image is stored in .bmp
format. Each gigabyte (GB) of storage space (which costs only a few hundreds of
Rs.) will hold approximately Fifteen thousands
Answer sheets / Application pages. |
| What if my database is too big to fit in one data volume? |
| A high-end imaging system will allow data and images to be stored across multiple volumes, with each volume residing in a different directory or on a different drive, disk array, CD or MO disk. |
| How much total RAM does imaging software require? |
| 256MB or more. |
| 4. Scanning/Storing |
| What
types of scanners are suited? |
| What
are the Scanning requirements? |
| What is the standard format used to store images? |
| What are
the most common hardware and software scanner interfaces? What image resolution should I use? Can I use any Other Image Resolutions? |
| How
are “skewed” images handled? |
| What types of scanners are suited? |
| Require
no special scanner or hardware device. Any type of scanner TWAIN Compatible can
be used. |
| What are the Scanning requirements? |
| Requirements
for image scanning to be used for OMR are: |
|
·
Output
Resolution:
100
dpi ·
Color
Mode:
Black
and White ·
Threshold
value:
160-165 · Paper size: A4 |
| What is the standard format used to store images? |
| .BMP
files. |
| What are the most common hardware and software scanner interfaces? |
| TWAIN |
| What image resolution should I use? |
| 100 dpi. |
| Can
I use any Other Image Resolutions? |
| NO,
Evaluator 2.0 can process only Black & white images scanned at 100 Dpi. |
| How are “skewed” images handled? |
| Skewed
(crooked or tilted) images can adversely affect the accuracy of the OMR
process, so an imaging system should include software that recognizes skewed
images and compensates for them. This is particularly important when scanning
press cuttings on a flat bed scanner or when scanning documents through a
worn-out or poorly-designed ADF (automatic document feeder). Evaluator 2.0
Handles this situation intelligently and the software solutions has built in
features to correct skew and rotation. |
| 5. Viewing/Printing/Exporting |
| How can I get printed answer sheets? Do you provide? How much do you charge for printing answer sheets? |

| 6. Technical |
| How
accurate or reliable is an Evaluator 2.0? |
| What
is the percentage of accuracy? How does it compare with the accuracy percentage
published by other companies? |
| How fast is the OCR process? |
| How accurate or reliable is an Evaluator 2.0? |
| Much better than human beings for sure. Given the same form to scan repeatedly, one can expect less than one error in each million boxes scanned. Evaluator 2.0 have been used to capture data from Answer sheets, an application where great emphasis is placed on accuracy and reliability. |
| What
is the percentage of accuracy? How does it compare with the accuracy percentage
published by other companies? |
| Evaluator
2.0 software is as accurate, or in many real world applications, more accurate
than traditional OMR readers. However, we do not claim any specific accuracy
percentage like the 99.99% accuracy number that others publish. This is not a
real number. It is derived from scanning a set of perfectly filled in forms. In
reality, you will never be processing a set of perfectly filled in forms!
These
forms can be filled with pen or pencil. Of course, if respondents filled in
every bubble with a high degree of accuracy, everyone would be happy… but this
does not happen.
|
| How fast is the OCR process? |
| A 133 MHz Pentium generally needs about 6 seconds per page, while a 450 MHz Pentium II will take about 2-3 seconds per page. |
| 7. Service and Procedures |

| 9. Misclleneous |
| Do
you release software updates? How do I know if one is available? |
| If power is fail during the evaluation of the O.M.R answer sheet |
| If
power is fail during the Scanning of the O.M.R answer sheet |
| If
current database is corrupted |
| Do you release software updates? How do I know if one is available? |
| The
Development and refinement in the software is regular feature and thus the
changes in the software will be done periodically and intimated to the
registered user as and when the upgrade is available along with technical /
commercial details if any. |
| If power is fail during the evaluation of the O.M.R answer sheet |
| User
should delete the current test record and again start the evaluation of the
answer sheet. The user is required to take precaution in creating the test name
again (or change the test Name for safety). A ups is also advised to use to
circumvent such problems |
| If
power is fail during the Scanning of the O.M.R answer sheet |
| Take off the answer sheet carefully and when power supply again then reconfigure the scanner setting, because the scanner not work at previous setting and put the sheet again on the scanner. You are also advised to delete the Images if any in the current selected folder |
| If
current database is corrupted |
| User
weekly take the back-up of the database, if the database is corrupt during the
evaluation then remove the current database and copy the last week database and
re-evaluate the current database. |
|
| Important point to remember during the scanning of the O.M.R answer sheet is that O.M.R sheet is placed on the scanner should not be folded from the corners, this will cause an error so this precaution is taken during the scanning of O.M.R answer sheet. |
